What makes one gold bar cheaper than another?
The gold itself costs the same everywhere, it tracks the live spot price. What differs between dealers is the premium, or dealer’s cut: the markup added on top of spot to cover refining, minting and margin. On a 1oz bar that’s typically around 2–6%. A smaller cut means more gold for your money, which is exactly what our ranking sorts by.
Two bars of the same weight and purity are interchangeable as an investment, so for a like-for-like comparison the lowest all-in price wins. We include delivery in that figure; UK dealers can’t add a surcharge for paying by debit or credit card (banned in 2018), so payment method rarely changes the total.
Which size of gold bar is cheapest?
Per gram, larger bars are cheaper, a 100g or 1kg bar carries a lower premium than a 1oz bar, which in turn beats small 1g–10g bars. We use the 1oz bar as the benchmark because it’s the size every dealer stocks, making it the fairest like-for-like comparison. If your budget runs to larger bars you’ll usually pay a little less per gram than the table above implies.
Gold bars or gold coins?
Bars are cheaper per gram because they carry a lower premium. Coins such as the 1oz Britannia cost a touch more, but UK legal-tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, which can outweigh the extra premium on a larger holding. Our bars vs coins guide explains how to choose, and you can switch the comparison tool between bars and coins.
Common questions
Which UK dealer has the cheapest gold bars?
It changes daily as dealers reprice against the live gold market. The table above shows today’s lowest dealer’s cut on a 1oz bar; enter your budget in the tool for the full ranking by how much gold you actually get.
Are these gold bar prices actually in stock?
Yes. We rank only the cheapest 1oz bar each dealer genuinely has in stock and ready to buy, and skip out-of-stock “from” prices that look cheap but can’t be purchased.
Do you add commission or take a cut?
No. We take no commission, affiliate or referral fees from any dealer. No dealer can pay for inclusion or a higher position, the order is decided purely by the verified all-in cost.
