Every cost, in plain English

The things dealers don’t always put on the sticker.

The dealer’s cut

Every dealer adds a markup on top of the gold price. It’s the biggest cost and the main thing we compare, a smaller cut means more gold for your money.

Delivery

Most dealers deliver free and fully insured. A few charge a small fee, and we include it in the price where they do.

Paying by card

Good news: UK dealers can’t add a surcharge for paying by a personal debit or credit card (banned since 2018), so card and bank transfer usually cost the same. A few give a small discount for bank transfer on large orders.

Storage

Only if you choose to store your gold with the dealer instead of having it delivered. A yearly fee, shown separately.

Buy-back price

What the dealer pays if you sell it back. The gap below the market price is your real cost for a round trip.

Minimum order

Most have none, but some only give free delivery or storage above a set amount.

Gold buying questions, answered

Do you earn commission or affiliate fees from dealers?

No. Cheapest Gold takes no commission, affiliate fee or referral payment from any dealer, and our outbound links are plain, unpaid links (not affiliate or tracking links). We make no money from what you buy or which dealer you choose, so we have no reason to favour one over another. The ranking is decided purely by verified price data.

Do dealers pay to be included or to rank higher?

No. No dealer can pay for inclusion or for a better position, it isn't for sale. Dealers are ranked only by the real all-in cost to you (the dealer's cut plus delivery, or storage). We include every UK dealer whose live price we can independently verify; a dealer is left out only when we can't reliably read their current price, never for commercial reasons.

How do I find the cheapest place to buy gold in the UK?

Enter your budget in the comparison tool above and we rank 13 trusted UK dealers by the real all-in cost of a 1oz gold bar (the dealer's cut plus delivery), so you can see which one gives you the most actual gold for your money. Prices are checked against the live gold price and updated regularly.

What is the premium, or dealer's cut, on a gold bar?

It's the amount a dealer charges above the raw gold price, covering refining, minting and their margin. On a 1oz bar it is typically around 2 to 6 per cent. A smaller cut means more gold for your money, and it is the main thing we compare.

Is it cheaper to buy gold bars or gold coins?

Bars are cheaper per gram because they carry a lower premium. But UK coins such as the Britannia and Sovereign are free of Capital Gains Tax, which on a larger holding can save more than the extra premium costs. Our guide on bars versus coins explains how to choose.

Do you pay tax when buying gold in the UK?

Investment-grade gold, both bars and coins, is VAT-free in the UK. You may owe Capital Gains Tax on any profit when you sell (the first 3,000 pounds of gains is tax-free in 2026/27, then 18 or 24 per cent), but UK legal-tender coins like the Britannia and Sovereign are exempt from CGT entirely. This is information, not tax advice.

Which UK dealer has the lowest premium on a 1oz gold bar?

It changes from day to day as dealers reprice against the market. Our comparison ranks them live and shows today's cheapest at the top, so enter any budget to see the current order.

How much is delivery, and can I pay by card?

Most UK bullion dealers deliver free and fully insured. And UK dealers cannot add a surcharge for paying by a personal debit or credit card (this was banned in the UK in 2018), so paying by card and by bank transfer usually cost the same.

Are the prices you show actually in stock?

Yes. We rank the cheapest item each dealer genuinely has in stock and ready to buy, whether a 1oz bar or a 1oz Britannia coin. We deliberately skip out-of-stock and sold-out “from” prices that look cheap but can't actually be purchased, so the price you see is a real one you can act on. Availability is re-checked every time we update.

Is buying physical gold safe and regulated?

Physical bullion is unregulated: it sits outside the Financial Conduct Authority and is not covered by the FSCS or the Financial Ombudsman Service. That doesn't make it unsafe, but it means buying from established, reputable dealers matters. We only rank dealers whose live prices we can verify.
